The book fails under the burden of endless backstories and anecdotes concerning almost everyone who appears. It moves forward in fits and starts, only to come crashing to a halt with yet another backstory about the life of one of the many officers involved, or an anecdote involving enlisted men. An entire paragraph is devoted to describing Adm. Merrill's eyebrows. In almost two thirds of the way into the book there is exactly one page of action involving Burke's destroyers with a previous squadron. You can skip the first 65% of the book and not miss a single page describing action involving DS23. Stringing together the relevant Wikipedia entries makes for better reading. If you haven't read it yet, "Japanese Destroyer Captain," by Hara, is far more worthy of your time.
